The heavily anticipated gold medal hockey game between host country Canada and the USA was everything it was expected to be…..a WAR. Canada has made no bones about it, they want this gold medal the most. Afterall, Canada did invent the game. 2 early goals put the USA in a bind. But shortly before the end of the 2nd period, USA got on the scoreboard. After a short intermission the 3rd period began. Team Canada was quick to the puck and the USA was sluggish at times getting into the offensive zone. It seemed like Team USA was hoping for one big score rather than executing an offensive game plan and working the puck to the crease. Just as time was running out and Team USA pulled the goalie and was able to get an extra forward on the ice. A miscue by Canadian goalie Roberto Luongo push the puck out top and into open ice where the USA slapped a shot towards the goal. Luongo saved the shot attempt, but wasn’t able to corral the puck. Zach Parise was there to capitalize. Parise took the ricochet and put the puck in the back of the net to tie the game with just 24 seconds left. OVERTIME!
Nothing like fresh ice and extra time to decide this gold medal hockey game. It was a frenzied pace. The tension was cranked up. Sidney Crosby, one of the best hockey players in the world, grabbed a short pass from Jarome Iginla in the USA zone and put it in the back of the net. Canada breathes a collective sigh of relief and wins the gold they coveted. The Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver can now be called a success…….at least in Canada’s eyes Do you hear that? You can almost hear the echo of ‘Oh Canada’ being sung by an entire nation.
