It’s a slow day in the sports world. So why not recap this past Sunday’s NASCAR race. The NASCAR schedule moved to Fontana and once again the reigning Sprint Cup Champion, Jimmie Johnson inflicted his will. After finishing 35th in last week’s Daytona 500, Johnson got a lucky break on his way to the winners circle. Johnson was in the pits when a late caution flag came out. His crew was able to get him out of the pits and past the start/finish line just in front of Childress racing team drivers Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick. This fraction of a second kept Johnson on the lead lap which was key to moving to the front of the pack later in the race. Had Burton been a few tenths of a second faster…….Jimmie Johnson would have been a lap down and his chances of winning the race all but over.
But, it didn’t happen that way and sometimes you’ve got to get lucky in NASCAR races.
“Yeah, the deal on pit row, there’s no way around it, we got lucky,” Johnson said. “We were running fourth or fifth at the time, so it’s not like we totally backed into this thing. We got a really nice gift with the way things worked out and it was up to me to kind of hang on to it.”
Next on the NASCAR schedule is Las Vegas this coming Sunday. I’m sure the NASCAR tickets will be a hot seller in Sin City. But, will Lady Luck be with Jimmie Johnson again? Stay tuned.
