Lindsey Vonn, the USA’s best hope for a medal in skiing, has concerns over competing in the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Today she revealed that on February 2nd, during a pre-Olympic slalom training practice in Austria, she had severely bruised her right shin. Now most of us are thinking “there’s no way we would miss the Olympics for a bruised shin!”, but these are very delicate athletes. They want and do compete at the highest level and when one little thing happens their performance can be compromised.
“It’s probably the worst place that you can have an injury, because you’re constantly pushing against your boot, and there’s no way around it,” Vonn said.
“I’m sitting here today questioning whether, you know, I’ll be even able to ski. I have to play it by ear,” she added.
Something tells me she will gut it out and perform well in Vancouver. She has access to some of the best trainers in the world. But, you never know. I’d say this is just the frame work for one of those tearful NBC Olympic stories we all love. What’s better than the worlds best skier getting hurt, almost not competing in the Olympics, gutting it out, and winning gold on the very last run of the day? Nothing……that’s why we love the Olympics. Go for the GOLD!!!!!
