“Today, I want to ask for your help. I ask you to find room in your heart to one day believe in me again.”
This was Tigers final statement. A statement that showed the humbleness of a champion.
Tiger Woods broke his silence today. He spoke for 15 minutes in front of friends and family (his wife Elin was not present) at the TPC Sawgrass golf course. The scene was bland. It was obvious that this was all about the speech and nothing more. There wasn’t an elaborate backdrop or a gaggle of press. This press conference was Tiger Woods stripped down to his lowest point. He addressed the nation with a firm tone. He apologized repeatedly about this infidelity and lack of moral behavior.
“I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was unacceptable and I am the only person to blame.”
“I thought I could get away with anything I wanted to. … I thought I was entitled. Thanks to money and fame, I didn’t have to go far to find it.”
When he said he was sorry he looked directly into the camera. DIRECTLY. As if he was looking at a putt to win the Masters. I felt as if he was trying to connect with each and every person he had let down. I, for one, believe him. Tiger Woods looked beat down. A man who had been at the highest high and was dealing with the lowest low.
On his rehabilitation, he stated that he has been in therapy for the last 45 days and will continue seeking help. He plans on returning to the rehabilitation center to continue this long process of recovery. This may come as a surprise to some of you who thought Tiger would be back at the Masters. This is just a testament to how serious Tiger is taking this situation.
At times Woods appeared angry. Mostly when speaking about the rumors that his wife Elin beat him with a golf club or inflicted violence upon him. Looking directly into the camera again Woods said,
“Elin never hit me that night or any other night … Elin has shown enormous grace and poise throughout this ordeal. Elin deserves praise not blame.”
Now, the one thing on everyone’s mind…..when will the greatest golfer in the world return? That’s the million dollar question. Tiger stated,
“I do plan to return to golf someday. I just don’t know when that will be. I don’t rule out that it will be this year. When I do return, I need to make my behavior more respectful of the game.”
The timetable for Woods’ return is cloudy. Could he return for the Masters? NO WAY. Could he return for the US OPEN at Pebble Beach? Possibly, especially since he was so dominant there the last time. Is it possible that he could take the year off? Most definitely. After seeing him speak today, he truly is a humbled man and I believe he takes this very seriously. The game of golf is big, but not bigger than salvaging his family and proving to his wife that he is the man she married.
I for one, am rooting for him. Get ready for the biggest most ferocious LIFE and SPORT comeback of all-time. I think he will approach it with the vigor of a TIGER!
